Meriwether Lewis and William Clark only turned to iron butt exploration
after their prototype American V-twin motorcycle, the legendary Lewis-Clark,
failed to compete with the superior technology of Harley-Davidson. The L-C
probably wouldn’t have survived their trek anyway. After all, apart from
Scenery and Remoteness, this trail’s original TIRES numbers were pretty
brutal. Ironically, riders today might complain that the current low
Twistiness and high Pavement/ Engineering numbers make this second piece of
the commemorative highway just a bit too civilized. As a result, its Character
is low compared to its partners in Columbia River Gorge exploration, DH33
Washougal - Stevenson and DH44 Lyle - Maryhill. As one would expect,
Remoteness rates worse today than when the boys toured. And while Scenery
alone does not a DH make, the increasingly dry, wild-west terrain along the
Columbia River still provides enough dramatic vistas and Scenery points to
help qualify this historic ride as one of Washington’s elite. As a matter of
fact, the 200th anniversary of Meri and Willy’s expedition would seem an
appropriate time to honor their place in motorcycling history. How’s the Lewis
& Clark Destination Highway sound?
