With the northern part of the Cascade Loop grabbing all the acclaim, this
quiet, underused highway, hidden in the trees on the south side of the Skagit
River, lies mostly forgotten and ignored. But mile for mile it’s a far better
warm-up or cool-down for DH1 Rockport - Winthrop than the straight west end of
Hwy 20, where the only excitement you’ll find comes courtesy of Concrete’s
predatory speed tax collectors. Whether it’s a traffic-free cruise under a
semi-canopy of trees along a surging river that appeals or just that you’d
rather avoid a contribution to Cement City’s number one industry, time here is
well spent. There are some inevitable houses and farms in the fertile
flatlands near Sedro Woolley, but they diminish as you ride east. Then it’s
mainly trees, water and curves.
